“That’s what made him stand out’ – Eguavoen reacts to Lookman winning CAF POTY award

Super Eagles interim manager, Augustine Eguavoen, has commented on Ademola Lookman’s victory in the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigeria international claimed the prestigious award after surpassing Achraf Hakimi, Serhou Guirassy, and Ronwen Williams at the ceremony held in Marrakech, Morocco.

Following congratulations from the Nigerian football community, the current caretaker of the Super Eagles shared what makes Lookman stand out from the rest.

“You could see a maturity in his game. He didn’t just play for himself—he played for the team, and that’s what made him stand out,” said the former KAA Gent player, as reported by Afrikaanspective.

Earlier this year, Lookman played a pivotal role in the Super Eagles’ run to the final of the tournament, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

Eguavoen praised Lookman’s attitude both on the pitch and off it, stressing his goal contributions as key criteria in winning the award.

“Ademola Lookman’s performance for both country and club speaks volumes,” Eguavoen stated. “He rises to every occasion, either scoring or assisting, and always maintains a positive attitude.”

By winning the CAF Player of the Year award, Lookman joins the ranks of Nigerian football legends like Kanu Nwankwo, Victor Ikpeba, Rashidi Yekini, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, and Victor Osimhen, who have previously claimed the prestigious honour.

Eguavoen reflected on Lookman’s achievement, noting how it could inspire future generations.

“This is another big achievement for Nigerian football,” Eguavoen said. “It will definitely inspire our players, especially the younger ones, to dream of achieving the same feat someday.”

Lookman remains a key figure in the Super Eagles’ push for a World Cup ticket, and he will be aiming to help the team secure qualification.
