Super Eagles B coach Daniel Ogunmodede has spotlighted three standout players in his squad as Nigeria readies for their crucial CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers against Ghana, Soccernet.ng reports.
The two-legged encounter begins in Accra on Sunday, December 22, with the return leg scheduled for December 28 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
Ogunmodede, who also manages NPFL side Remo Stars, identified Ifeanyi Onyebuchi (Rangers International), Junior Nduka (Remo Stars), and Papa Daniel Mustapha (Niger Tornadoes) as pivotal to Nigeria’s chances of success.
Speaking to CAFOnline.com, the coach praised their qualities:
“Several players have stood out for their dedication, skill, and leadership. Buchi has been exceptional, and Nduka’s leadership qualities are noteworthy. Papa is another standout. They have set high standards in training, showcasing versatility and inspiring their teammates.”
Reflecting on the legendary Ghana-Nigeria rivalry, Ogunmodede stressed the importance of focus and preparation:
“We emphasize focusing on the present moment, respecting our opponents, and channeling the rivalry into positive motivation. Effective communication and mental preparation have kept the players focused solely on the game.”
Nigeria’s CHAN Eagles have been in camp for two weeks, training at Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, to refine their strategies.
They wrapped up preparations with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Remo Stars in a friendly. Goals from Isaac Saviour (2nd minute) and Samuel Ayanrinde (75th minute) secured the win, though Victory Iboro pulled one back for the NPFL side in stoppage time.
The team departs for Ghana on Friday with an 18-man squad and a mission to overturn their previous CHAN qualifiers disappointment.
Nigeria narrowly missed the last edition of the tournament after losing 5-4 on penalties to Ghana following a 2-2 aggregate draw. Ogunmodede’s men will aim to exact revenge and secure their place in the competition.
