Super Eagles captain Troost-Ekong focuses on tactical preparation ahead of Rwanda clash

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has assured fans that Nigeria’s final Africa Cup of Nations 2025 qualifying match against Rwanda will be approached with seriousness and professionalism, despite already securing qualification, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 2023 AFCON runners-up have secured their ticket to participate in the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco following a 1-1 draw against the Republic of Benin.

Speaking ahead of the clash at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Troost-Ekong dismissed concerns about complacency.

He stressed the importance of using the match as a platform to fine-tune strategies for both the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

“We’ve qualified, and I think there’s been a lot of concern about whether we’ll take the game seriously. But, I think all of us would have been happy to qualify with two games in hand. So, we are here now. We can’t change the situation. We are going to take the game tomorrow very seriously.” Troost-Ekong said.

The former Watford defender revealed the tactical importance of the game, noting that Rwanda, who Nigeria will face again during the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025, poses a significant challenge.

Reflecting on their previous encounter, he described the Amavubi as a difficult side and praised their goalkeeper, who was instrumental in holding Nigeria to a draw in Kigali.

“As we said before, Rwanda is a good team, but when we faced them in Rwanda, it was a difficult game. The goalkeeper got the man of the match, and we had the best chances to win that game. So it was not easy at all, and we know tomorrow is going to be a very difficult game as well.” he added.

With key players like Ademola Lookman, Ola Aina, and Stanley Nwabali unavailable, Troost-Ekong remains confident in the team’s ability to adapt and deliver a strong performance.

Kick-off for the clash is scheduled for 5 pm Nigerian time, with the Super Eagles looking to extend their dominance and end the qualifiers on a high note.
