“Super Eagles cannot allow defeat by Rwanda” – Benin’s Rohr relies on Nigeria for AFCON qualification

Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr is counting on the Super Eagles to avoid defeat against Rwanda, a result that could secure Benin’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Soocernet.ng reports.

Group D remains delicately poised heading into the final round of matches.

Nigeria have already qualified as group winners, leaving the second ticket up for grabs.

Benin, currently second with seven points, need at least a draw against Libya to progress.

However, a Rwandan victory by a four-goal margin or more in Uyo could complicate matters for the Cheetahs.

Rohr, however, is optimistic that the Super Eagles will hold their ground at home. Nigeria have an unbeaten record against Rwanda, with two wins and four draws in their six previous encounters.

Speaking ahead of today’s decisive fixtures, Rohr told the NationSports:

“Two of the three possible results in a football match will be good for us to qualify for AFCON 2025. As such, we must avoid defeat against Libya.”

The German tactician, who coached Nigeria to AFCON 2019 after back-to-back absences in 2015 and 2017, added:

“If we can get a draw, we would qualify even if Rwanda win in Uyo, which I don’t believe is possible. I’m confident the Super Eagles, playing at home, cannot allow defeat by Rwanda.”

Rohr’s Benin are aiming for their first AFCON appearance since Egypt 2019, while Rwanda are seeking to qualify for the first time since 2004.

Today’s Group D action will decide the final outcome, with Benin facing Libya in Tripoli while Nigeria host Rwanda in Uyo.
