Former AC Milan defender Ümit Davala has applauded the sportsmanship and character of Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen during Galatasaray SK’s clash with Bodrumspor, Soccernet.ng reports.
Osimhen guided teammate Michy Batshuayi to a banner commemorating Yiğit Kurt, a 9-year-old Galatasaray fan who tragically died while travelling to support the team in a Europa League match against Tottenham.
Galatasaray fans honoured Yiğit Kurt’s memory with a banner displayed during the match with Bodrumspor at the Bodrum Stadium.
The Yellow-Reds struggled to break the deadlock until the 54th minute when Michy Batshuayi converted a brilliant assist from Dries Mertens, securing a 1-0 victory.
Following the goal, Osimhen led the Belgian international to the banner to honour the young fan, a gesture that resonated deeply with the fans and Galatasaray legend, Davala.
“Osimhen directed Batshuayi to the banner of the late Yiğit Kurt when he scored the goal.” Davala said. “His footballing skills are okay but his personality and humanity made me very happy. Galatasaray has really acquired a very good character.”
During the international break, Osimhen equalled Segun Odegbami’s long standing goal record during Nigeria’s clash against Benin Republic. Although, in his return to the club, the Super Eagles striker failed to score during the match against Bodrumspor, and will be aiming to rediscover his scoring form when Galatasaray face AZ Alkmaar in their next Europa League fixture.
