“Don’t even know why they invited him” – Real Sociedad’s Sadiq bashed for late arrival to Super Eagles camp

Former Nigeria international Duke Udi has publicly criticised Umar Sadiq for arriving late to the Super Eagles camp ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Real Sociedad forward, who has been struggling for form at his club, reported to camp on Wednesday morning, two days after most players had arrived.

Sadiq, named in Nigeria’s 23-man squad by caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen, had not received a national team call-up since his appearance at the 2021 AFCON.

His inclusion sparked debates, with many questioning the decision to overlook in-form strikers like Cyriel Dessers of Rangers and Tolu Arokodare of Genk.

Speaking on Brila FM’s No Holds Barred with Ifeanyi Udeze, Udi expressed disappointment in Sadiq’s attitude and body language.

“Sadiq’s case seems to be one not wanting to represent the country, then you are calling the person. What do you expect?” he asked.

“He is a top professional and has made us proud, but I like players that can come out straight. If you don’t want to play, it’s fine—just say it. Don’t stroll into camp casually and disrespect the others who are fully committed.”

Udi also questioned the rationale behind Sadiq’s invitation, given his poor run at Real Sociedad.

“He is not going to play. I don’t even know why they invited him. He has issues with his club Real Sociedad and has not even been playing,” Udi added.

“Why add more pressure by inviting him to the national team only to sit on the bench? It’s unnecessary stress.”

Sadiq remained on the bench as Nigeria secured a 1-1 draw against Benin, with Victor Osimhen salvaging a point. The striker will hope to feature when the Super Eagles face Rwanda in Uyo on Monday.
