Snubbed by CAF, celebrated abroad: Jose Peseiro earns International nod for AFCON success

Jose Peseiro led the Super Eagles of Nigeria to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament where he lost to Cote d'ivoire

Former Super Eagles boss Jose Peseiro has been nominated for the World’s Best National Team Coach by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), Soccernet.ng reports.

The Portuguese manager was notably omitted from the Confederation of African Football’s Coach of the Year shortlist, which includes Burkina Faso’s Brahim Traore and Cote d’Ivoire’s Emerse Fae.

Nevertheless, Peseiro received international recognition from the IFFHS, which previously awarded the title to Argentine head coach Lionel Scaloni for two consecutive years.

Following the announcement, the former Sporting CP manager took to social media to share his excitement and gratitude for the nomination, extending his thanks to the Nigeria Football Federation for his 22-month tenure with the Super Eagles.

“Very proud and satisfied to receive this nomination from IFFHS, a recognition that reflects the hard work and dedication that my coaching staff and I have invested over the years in service to the Nigerian national team,” Peseiro stated. “The records we have broken will go down in history, as well as the unforgettable journey to the AFCON final. I thank the Nigeria Football Federation, the players for the dedication they showed in every training session and competition, as well as all the staff and fans who supported us and believed in our work.”

He added, “I also want to personally thank my family for their constant support and encouragement.”

The 64-year-old coach will face competition from the likes of Gareth Southgate, Didier Deschamps, Ronald Koeman, and Lionel Scaloni for this prestigious honour.
