Premier League: Three key stats show Wilfred Ndidi is Leicester City’s most important player

Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has emerged as Leicester City’s linchpin in their return to the Premier League, Soccernet.ng reports.

After nine matches back in the top flight, the Nigerian midfielder’s performances have shown just how vital he is to the Foxes’ hopes this season.

While Leicester navigated the summer transfer window amid interest from several clubs, including Everton, Lyon, and Marseille, they succeeded in retaining Ndidi, a move now paying significant dividends.

Ndidi, who signed a new contract on July 12, 2024, has been a standout for Leicester under manager Steve Cooper.

The 27-year-old has started every league game, demonstrating his indispensable role with strong defensive contributions and surprising creativity in attack.

According to Opta, Ndidi leads the Premier League in tackles with 33 — a testament to his tenacity and reading of the game. He also ranks second in duels won (64), underscoring his resilience in the midfield battle.

However, it’s Ndidi’s unexpected contribution in the final third that truly highlights his all-round impact.

Only Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer have registered more assists than Ndidi’s four so far this season.

This stat places him among elite playmakers, an impressive feat for a player known primarily for his defensive attributes.

With Leicester facing Manchester United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, Cooper will likely rely on his star midfielder to anchor the team as they adapt to the new tactical challenge presented by Ruud van Nistelrooy, who is expected to replace the recently dismissed Erik ten Hag.

Ndidi’s influence on Leicester’s season cannot be overstated.

As one of the team’s most consistent performers, his contributions in both defence and attack are invaluable, and his form could be pivotal in Leicester’s pursuit of stability in the Premier League.
