“Not one I wanted to lose” – Everton boss Dyche admits regret over Alex Iwobi sale as Fulham star returns to Goodison Park

Everton manager Sean Dyche has admitted he was reluctant to let Alex Iwobi leave, as the Nigerian winger prepares for his return to Goodison Park with Fulham in their upcoming Premier League clash, Soccernet.ng reports.

Iwobi, who joined Everton in 2019 from Arsenal for a reported £28 million, spent four years at the club, gradually growing from a struggling newcomer to an essential figure in the team’s fight against relegation.

Iwobi’s contributions were instrumental in Everton’s Premier League campaigns, especially during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.

In his final season with the Toffees, the versatile midfielder notched eight assists and earned the Players’ Player of the Season award.

Despite his importance, Iwobi departed for Fulham in September 2023, with Everton reportedly receiving £22 million as he entered the final year of his contract.

Reflecting on the transfer, Dyche said, “It was a very good deal for the club. I thought he was an excellent servant certainly in my time here, enjoyed having him around the place.

“He was a joy to work with, a very good player in my opinion. Not one I wanted to lose but needs must at that time. It was a good fee for a good player.”

Since his move to Fulham, Iwobi has continued to thrive, recording seven goals and three assists in 43 appearances for the London club.

This season, he has already registered a goal and an assist in eight league matches, contributing to Fulham’s positive start.

The Cottagers currently sit in 10th place with 11 points from their opening eight games, adding intrigue to Iwobi’s return to Merseyside, where he will face his former side under Dyche’s watchful eye.
