Nigeria’s Flamingos played out a 1-1 draw against Mexico in a friendly match on Monday as part of their preparations for the upcoming 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, Soccernet.ng reports.
The match, held in the Dominican Republic, served as a valuable warm-up ahead of the global tournament set to take place later this month.
Faridat Abdulkareem gave the Flamingos an early lead in the 33rd minute, finding the net after a well-worked team move.
However, the Mexican side equalised just before the half-time whistle, making it 1-1 after 42 minutes. Despite both teams creating chances in the second half, neither could break the deadlock, and the game ended in a draw.
The Flamingos, coached by Bankole Olowookere, will be looking to build on this performance as they head into the World Cup.
Nigeria have been drawn in Group A alongside hosts Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and New Zealand. Their opening game is scheduled for October 16, 2024, against New Zealand, a crucial fixture as they aim to start their campaign on a strong note.
At the 2022 edition of the U-17 Women’s World Cup in India, Nigeria finished in third place, marking a successful run for the Flamingos. This year, they will be hoping to go even further and challenge for the title as they kick off their journey in the Dominican Republic.
With a blend of youthful talent and high ambitions, the Flamingos are determined to make a strong impression in this year’s tournament.
