Ahmed Musa: 2013 AFCON winner rejoins NPFL side

Ahmed Musa is Nigeria's top scorer at the FIFA World Cup tournament, and most notable for his brace against Iceland and Argentina.

Former Leicester City and CSKA Moscow forward, Ahmed Musa, had joined Nigeria Professional Football League side, Kano Pillars, on a short-term deal, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 31-year-old rejoins the club where he made his breakthrough in professional football after touring Europe and the middle East.

The ex-Al Nassr forward alongside Super Eagles right back, Shehu Abdullahi were seen at the Kano Pillars training ground ahead of the club’s NPFL matchday five home clash against Sunshine Stars.

“Ahmed Musa, Shehu Abdullahi, Nazir Laja, and the rest of the squad trained ahead of NPFL 2024/25 Matchday 5 clash against Sunshine Stars this weekend,” the club posted on their official account on Friday.

Musa became a household name in the Nigerian local league during the 2009/2010 season, ending the season as the league’s top scorer with 18 goals before joining VVV Venlo in the Dutch Eredivisie.

He then joined CSKA Moscow before heading to the English Premier League for a brief stint with Leicester City, which saw him head back on loan to Russia.

He moved to Saudi Arabia to play for Al Nassr before returning to Europe, having brief stints with Fatih Karagümrük and Sivasspor.

Shehu Abdullahi, on the other hand returns to Kano Pillars after featuring for them in 2012. Shehu was a part of the Super Eagles team that clinched bronze medal at the 2019 AFCON medal.

Despite the league’s transfer window being shut, Kano Pillars will be allowed to register the two veterans under the free agent category.
