2025 AFCON qualifiers: Three Super Eagles players who can lead Nigeria to victory despite Osimhen’s absence

Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign has hit a bump with star striker Victor Osimhen ruled out due to injury.

The prolific forward, currently on loan at Galatasaray, picked up a knock during a league match, leaving interim coach Augustine Eguavoen with the task of restructuring his attack.

It would be noted that the 25-year-old’s absence from the country squad this season has resulted in a two losses in the year 2024—against Mali and Benin Republic except Ghana, which was a narrow victory.

Despite Osimhen’s absence for these upcoming games against Libya, Nigeria boasts plenty of players who can still make an impact.

Soccernet.ng lists three Super Eagles players who could step up and secure victory in the crucial doubleheader against Libya:

1. Ademola Lookman:

Lookman has been in outstanding form for both Atalanta and Nigeria in 2024. After netting a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final and delivering standout performances in the 2023 AFCON tournament, he has emerged as a potential contender for this year’s African Player of the Year award.

The impact of the former Everton forward for Nigeria was felt during the match against the Republic of Benin, where he scored two goals. Returning to his club, he has netted two goals and provided two assists for Gian Gespareni’s men.

His recent performances make him a key player in leading the Super Eagles to victory in Osimhen’s absence.

2. Victor Boniface

The big striker has not had the best of luck on international duty, having struggled to score his first goal for Nigeria despite getting extended playing time under Augustine Eguavoen.

However, since returning to Bayer Leverkusen, Boniface has been in red-hot form, racking up five goals and one assist.

With Osimhen unavailable, Boniface is expected to bring his explosive club form to the national team. Eguavoen will be relying solely on him to lead the line and make a significant impact in the upcoming fixtures.

3. Stanley Nwabali

Stanley Nwabali has steadily become a reliable figure for Nigeria since his impressive performances at AFCON 2023. The Chippa United goalkeeper has consistently proven his worth with key saves that have kept the Super Eagles competitive in matches.

With Nigeria preparing for the crucial matches against Libya, Nwabali’s shot-stopping abilities in goal will be crucial in securing a solid defensive foundation for the team.
