West Ham United’s new striker, Niclas Füllkrug, has surprised fans by revealing his love for Afrobeats music, particularly Nigerian superstar Burna Boy, Soccernet.ng reports.
The German international, who joined the Premier League side from Borussia Dortmund this summer, made this statement during a media interaction as part of his pre-season preparations.
Füllkrug, who made a £27 million switch to the Hammers, was asked about his music preferences, and without hesitation, the 31-year-old responded:
“Favourite music artist? At the moment: Burna Boy.”
His admiration for the Grammy-winning Afrobeats star was further highlighted when he was asked to sing his favourite song lyric. He humorously belted out the popular line “Shayoooo” from Burna Boy’s hit single Last Last, a track known for its breakup theme.
Expanding on his love for the genre, Füllkrug added,
“I like Afrobeats a lot. I love Burna Boy and stuff like that.”
His unexpected connection with Nigerian music is a delightful twist for fans who associate the towering forward more with his exploits on the pitch than his music taste.
Füllkrug’s move to West Ham follows a productive year at Borussia Dortmund and a standout performance at the European Championships, which caught the attention of several Premier League clubs.
Despite joining West Ham, Füllkrug has yet to establish himself in the starting lineup, having made his debut as a substitute in a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa.
However, his goal for Germany in a recent 5-0 UEFA Nations League win over Hungary suggests his form remains intact.
