Super Falcons star named among best players in Portugal after stellar season

Super Falcons midfielder Christy Ucheibe has been named one of the standout players in the 2023/24 Portuguese BPI League, earning a spot in the prestigious Team of the Season, Soccernet.ng reports.

Ucheibe’s inclusion comes after an unforgettable year, where she not only excelled individually but also contributed significantly to her club’s success.

The Nigerian international played a crucial role in helping Benfica Feminino achieve a remarkable quadruple, lifting the Campeonato Nacional, Taça de Portugal, and Taça da Liga, in addition to the Campeonato Nacional II Divisão.

Her performance across the season also saw her play in eleven UEFA Women’s Champions League matches, netting a goal and proving to be a key asset in midfield.

Ucheibe’s outstanding form continued into the new season, as she was voted the best player in the Algarve Women’s Trophy in August.

She played a pivotal role in securing Benfica’s victories at the Algarve Stadium, including their thrilling 4-3 win over Sevilla.

“God is not done with me yet! All glory to God almighty,” Ucheibe said after the win, adding, “Benfica by soul, see you next week for a new episode of Benfica.”

The 23-year-old, originally from Abia, Nigeria, has made 68 appearances for Benfica since joining in 2020, scoring four goals.

Ucheibe’s career has been on a steady rise since she began her professional journey with Nasarawa Amazons in 2018. She has also represented Nigeria at U-17 and U-20 levels, and since 2022, she has earned 61 caps for the Super Falcons, scoring once.
