Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel has apologised to Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho following his red card in their Europa League clash against Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise, Soccernet.ng reports.
Fenerbahce secured a 2-1 victory over Umion SG on Thursday, but Osayi-Samuel’s night took a turn for the worse after his dismissal.
Having recently returned from an injury layoff, Osayi-Samuel came off the bench and played a crucial role in Fenerbahce’s second goal.
His shot led to Union SG defender Christian Burgess scoring an own goal in the 82nd minute, giving Fenerbahce a crucial 2-0 lead.
However, the Nigerian international was shown two yellow cards in quick succession during the closing stages of the match.
His second foul resulted in a penalty for Union SG, who converted it in the 93rd minute to pull one back.
Despite the nervy finish, Fenerbahce held on to claim all three points. However, Osayi-Samuel was visibly disappointed with his performance and took swift action to address his mistakes.
According to Sporx, the Super Eagles star apologised to both his teammates and Mourinho in the dressing room after the match.
Fortunately for Osayi-Samuel, Mourinho did not appear to hold a grudge, and the Fenerbahce boss has already included him in the squad for the upcoming league fixture against Antalyaspor. The Nigerian international is expected to be selected to Fenerbahce’s starting lineup for the Super Lig clash.
However, the red card means Osayi-Samuel will be unavailable for Fenerbahce’s next Europa League match against Twente next week.
