Raphael Onyedika bags club award after red card saga against Charleroi

Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika has been named Club Brugge’s Player of the Month for September, earning 31% of the fan votes, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigerian star edged out competition from teammates Christos Tzolis and Hans Vanaken to claim the prestigious award, capping off an impressive month of performances.

Onyedika has been a pivotal figure in Brugge’s midfield, dictating play in both domestic league matches and on the European stage. His commanding displays helped the Belgian giants maintain their strong form in September, making him a deserving recipient of the award.

However, despite his success, Onyedika’s month ended on a controversial note during Club Brugge’s 1-1 draw with Charleroi at Stade du Pays.

The match took a dramatic turn when the 22-year-old midfielder was shown a red card in the 55th minute for a challenge that many, including Club Brugge head coach Nick Hayen, felt was unjust.

The referee deemed Onyedika’s tackle as dangerous, leading to his dismissal. Speaking after the game, Hayen expressed his disagreement with the decision.

“That is never a red card. Yes, he goes in hard, but not with the studs on the ankle. It wasn’t a dangerous action, and he also touched the ball,” Hayen said, adding that a yellow card would have been sufficient.

Despite being reduced to ten men, Club Brugge fought back, with Charleroi initially taking the lead through Parfait Guiagon in the 48th minute.

Brugge managed to equalize late in the game to salvage a 1-1 draw. Onyedika’s red card, however, means he will miss Brugge’s upcoming matches against Royale Union SG, Westerloo, and Anderlecht.

Though marred by the red card incident, Onyedika’s contributions throughout the month ensured he remained a fan favourite, with his performances earning him well-deserved recognition.

The midfielder will now look forward to making his return after suspension and continuing his strong run for the Belgian champions.
