Belgian top-flight side Mechelen are reportedly among several clubs interested in signing former Nigeria U20 striker Salim Fago Lawal from Croatian outfit NK Istra, Soccernet.ng reports.
Lawal previously signed a three-year contract with an additional option for a one-year extension with Istra 1961.
The 21-year-old forward has proven his worth, netting three goals in 12 league appearances, including seven starts, for Istra last season, and has already made four starts in the current campaign, continuing his steady development in Croatia.
The former Mavlon FC forward’s impressive performances have attracted interest from several Jupiler Pro League clubs looking to strengthen their squads with his signature.
Despite the growing interest from clubs in Belgium and beyond, Soccernet.ng learned that the young striker is content to remain in Croatia, where he aims to continue his progress, even as negotiations are ongoing.
Lawal made his move to Europe from Lagos-based Mavlon FC after showcasing his potential at the prestigious Viareggio Cup in 2023.
His performances earned him a call-up to Nigeria’s Flying Eagles for the FIFA U20 World Cup in Argentina, where he scored in a 2-0 group-stage victory over Italy. Lawal was a key figure for the Ladan Bosso-led side, starting all five matches as the team reached the quarterfinals.
With interest from clubs across Europe, the former U20 star’s future remains a hot topic as the transfer window draws to a close today in Belgium.
