“Mixed Emotions” – Super Eagles star speaks on ending his seven-year stint with Leicester City

Super Eagles and Sevilla striker, Kelechi Promise Iheanacho, has spoken about his Leicester exit for the first time since joining his new club, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 27-year-old joined Leicester City from Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in 2017 and went on to score 71 goals alongside providing 42 assists in 218 games for the Foxes.

However, his last season with the club didn’t go according to plan for the Nigerian striker, as he claimed things ended on a mixed note. The one-time FA Cup winner was subject to just ten starts in the EFL Championships under Enzo Maresca with his last start coming just before the turn of the year against West Bromwich Albion last December.

“Last season was one of mixed emotions. I played the first half of the season but I didn’t really get a chance in the second part of the season. But most importantly, as a team, we won the trophy. We were a good group together. We did it for all of us and for the football club. That was the most important thing. It’s a nice football club and a good family. It was great to end with a smile and a trophy,” the 2023 AFCON finalist said in quotes revealed by Leicester Mercury.

Iheanacho’s best stint with Leicester City came under Brendan Rodgers in the 2020/2021 season where he scored 19 goals and provided seven assists in 39 games across all competitions. Alongside that, the Sevilla striker lifted the Emirates FA Cup and the Community Shield as the curtain raise of the following season.

The 2013 U-17 FIFA World Cup winner joins Sevilla on a free transfer. He penned a two-year deal with the seven-time UEFA Europa League winners with the option to extend for a further year.
