Former Spanish Laliga champions Barcelona are planning to sign Chelsea star Carney Chukwuemeka this summer as a cover for their central midfielder position, Soccernet.ng reports.
Barcelona have had quiet summer transfer window thus far, signing only Dani Olmo in a €55 million deal from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.
They have also been heavily linked with Atletic Bilbao star Nico Williams, who had an excellent campaign with Spain in the run-up to their 2024 Euros win.
But in a new development, the Blaugrana are reportedly looking to add some reinforcements in their midfield. According to Tjuanmarti, Barcelona have approached Chelsea for the signing of Chukwuemeka as they are looking to add some quality to their midfield.
The 20-year-old midfielder joined the Blues from Aston Villa two seasons ago, but he has struggled to make a name for himself there. Chukwuemeka has produced just two goals and one assist in 27 appearances for the Londoners.
Also, the 20-year-old has not gotten a lot of playtime in pre-season thus far, indicating that he is dispensable. Chelsea, who already have a bloated squad would be more than willing to sell, especially if Barcelona can table up to €30 million.
The Blaugrana are cash trapped due to La liga’s financial rules, and they may try to wrap up the deal as soon as possible.
Chukwuemeka was born to Nigerian parents in Spain, but he currently plays for the English youth teams because he grew up in England. He could still switch to Nigeria if he does not play for the Three Lions.
