Official: Nigeria’s best player in Romania seals move to UAE’s Al Wahda

United Arab Emirates giants Al Wahda FC have finalised the signing of Nigerian winger Philip Otele from Romanian club CFR Cluj, Soccernet.ng reports.

Otele, aged 25, has inked a four-year deal with Al Wahda, tying him to the club until the summer of 2028.

Reports suggest he will earn €1.5 million annually. The transfer fee paid by Al Wahda to CFR Cluj is reported to be €3.5 million.

Expressing his enthusiasm after completing the move, Otele remarked,

“I am extremely happy and excited for the upcoming challenges and competitions with Al Wahda. I am proud to wear this badge and grateful for the warm welcome and confidence from the club’s leadership and management.”

It is a surprise move as, only a few weeks ago, Otele appeared poised to move to one of the most glamorous leagues in Europe.

English Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion had been pursuing Otele but missed out on securing his signature after the Nigerian opted to move to the UAE.

Brighton’s interest in Otele was prominent before the departure of Roberto De Zerbi from the club at the end of the 2023-2024 season.

Earlier in his career, Otele played for Kauno Žalgiris, Wolviston FC, and UTA Arad before joining CFR Cluj in July 2023.

His time at CFR Cluj was marked by a standout season, where he scored 18 goals in 40 appearances, placing him joint-top scorer in the league alongside Florinel Coman of FC Steaua București.

Otele’s performances earned him recognition as Nigeria’s top player in Romania for the campaign, securing a place in the league’s Team of the Season.

CFR Cluj have already prepared for Otele’s departure by securing the return of Adrian Păun to the club.
