Former Turkish Super Lig champions Fenerbahce have joined rivals Trabzonspor in the race to sign Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu this summer, Soccernet.ng reports.
Onuachu’s future has been in question this summer after his brilliant campaign for Trabzonspor last season, when he recorded 15 goals and four assists in 21 Turkish Super Lig.
The 30-year-old spent last season on loan at the club after a failed transfer at English Premier League side Southampton. However, it was just a season-long loan deal, which means that Onuachu has to return to the St. Mary’s this summer.
But it seems both parties are not interested in a reunion. Coach Russell Martin does not seem to have Onuachu in his plans for next season, and the Nigeria striker does not even seem interested in returning to the club.
Meanwhile, Trabzonspor have been in talks with Southampton, as they want to sign Onuachu for next season. The Turkish club want a loan deal, but the Saints are holding out for a permanent transfer with a €11 million fee, which Trabzonspor are unwilling to pay.
Both parties are yet to conclude on a deal yet, and according to Fener Medya, Fenerbahce could swoop in for Onuachu. Fenerbahce have a fatter bank account that Trabzonspor, and they could meet Southampton’s demands.
They even have an extra motivation because they are looking to reclaim the Super Lig title after losing it to Galatasaray last season.
Onuachu has played for Nigeria’s Super Eagles 25 times, and he has scored three goals.
