Ex-Super Eagles coach highlights next season’s goals for his new club

Finidi George worked with Jose Peseiro as the assistant coach of the Super Eagles from 2022 until the end of the AFCON 2023 tournament.

Former Super Eagles and Enyimba International coach, Finidi George has outlined his plans for his new side, Rivers United ahead of the 2024/2025 NPFL season, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 53-year-old started his coaching career with the PEC Zwolle U-19 team in the Netherlands. He also had a brief stint with the Real Betis youth team before returning to Nigeria and taking up the head coach position with Enyimba International.

The former Ajax winger worked under former Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro as an assistant, and together, they led Nigeria to a second-place finish in Ivory Coast. Finidi took over from Peseiro in an interim role before a permanent appointment came in May.

The appointment didn’t go well for the former Ipswich Town winger, and he handed in his resignation letter after just two games. Barely a month after, Finidi landed the head coach role with NPFL side, Rivers United, and outlined his plan for the team.

“I am honoured to have this opportunity and I thank the Sports commissioner the general manager and the supporters for their confidence in me. I am committed to working hard and making the team win. The target set is to win games and at least finish on the continent next season,” the former Super Eagles manager told Brila.

Rivers United employed Finidi George with the goal of assembling the best squad in the NPFL, whilst reclaiming themselves as a household name on the African continent.
