“The time has come” – Super Eagles-eligible player confirms Arsenal exit

Arsenal Academy player Arthur Okonkwo has confirmed his departure from Arsenal with a heartfelt farewell message as his contract with the club expires, Soccernet.ng reports.

Okonkwo, who joined the Gunners at the age of eight in 2009, has emerged in recent years as one of the club’s most promising talents.

During his season-long loan at AFC Wrexham, Okonkwo produced excellent performances, keeping 14 clean sheets in 36 appearances, which played a crucial role in their promotion from League Two to League One. This has reportedly led to discussions about a permanent move to the club.

Okonkwo Bids Farewell

Wrexham is keen on securing Okonkwo permanently following his impressive loan spell and Arsenal release. Manager Phil Parkinson has expressed interest in retaining the goalkeeper.

Okonkwo confirmed the reports on his Instagram, announcing he will leave Arsenal when his contract ends on June 30, with League One side Wrexham likely to be his next destination.

He wrote: “The time has come to say goodbye @arsenal ❤️ Having joined the club in 2009 at 8 years old, I have so many incredible memories from over 15 years.

“I’ve made friends for life and owe so much to all the coaches I’ve worked with, teammates I’ve played with, fans who’ve supported me, and everyone involved with the club for helping me grow and develop into the person and player I am today.

“Arsenal will always be special to me and I hope to see them be successful in the coming years. Thank you 🤝.”

Is Okonkwo Eligible to Play for Nigeria?

Born in London to Igbo parents of Nigerian origin, Okonkwo is eligible to play for the Super Eagles despite making appearances for England youth teams like U-16, U-18, and U-17.

As reported by the Guardian, Okonkwo has pledged his allegiance to Nigeria, having not received a call-up from the Three Lions.

Further reports suggest that FIFA has approved his application to switch his nationality from England to Nigeria.
