Report: Finidi George resigns as Super Eagles head coach

Finidi George was in charge of the Super Eagles for a total of four games, winning one, losing two and drawing one.

Former Enyimba International coach, Finidi George, has quit his role as the coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Soccernet.ng reports.

A vibrant right-winger for the Super Eagles in his playing days, Finidi won the 1994 AFCON tournament with Nigeria. He also won the UEFA Champions League and the Super Cup with Ajax.

After a brief stint in Spain, Finidi returned to the Nigeria Professional Football League to take charge of Enyimba, and in his second season at the club, won the league title.

In that time, he worked as an assistant under the then Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro. After the AFCON tournament, the Portuguese coach’s contract wasn’t renewed by the NFF, leaving the position vacant at the end of February.

Finidi took charge of the team on an interim basis for the March International break, guiding the team to a 2-1 win over Ghana, before falling to a 2-0 defeat against Mali in Morocco.

Last month, after a thorough meeting with the Nigerian Football Federation, Finidi was appointed to be the head coach of the Super Eagles and was immediately given the sole responsibility of qualifying the team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In two qualifying games, the Super Eagles played a 1-1 draw against South Africa in Uyo, before losing to Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic in Ivory Coast. The Super Eagles are now 5th in their qualification group with three points from four games.

As per multiple reports, Finidi has relinquished his role as the head coach of the Super Eagles after a foreign technical adviser was employed.

Soccernet.ng will continue to bring updates on the situation between the role of the Super Eagles coach and the Nigerian Football Federation.
