NPFL Round-up: Rangers lift League title, Sporting Lagos press on in relegation battle

Rangers International last won the Nigeria Professional League title in 2016. They have now repeated the feat under Fidelis Ilechukwu.

The NPFL Matchday 37 delivered as the 2023/2024 season winds up. We have a league champion and three teams have been officially relegated. Soccernet.ng brings a detailed report of the action across the local Nigerian league.

Chukwudi Esobe’s goal made all the difference for the already relegated Heartland as they claimed three points over Niger Tornadoes.

Katsina United compounded Doma’s woes, cruising to a 2-0 victory over the relegated Doma United. Samson Olasupo and Azeez Falolu found the back of the net to help the home side to three points.

Lobi Stars emerged victorious in a seven-goal thriller against Kwara United, trashing the Ilorin boys with a 4-3 scoreline while Plateau United played a 1-1 draw against Kano Pillars.

Already relegated Gombe United had no answer to Rivers United’s attack, conceding six goals. Shedrack Asiegbu and Seiyefa Jackson picked up a brace each, while Enyinnaya Kazie and Nwangwa Enyima added to Gombe’s misery.

Sunday Megwo’s brace gave Abia Warriors a comfortable 2-0 win over Akwa United while Bassey John’s double gave Bayelsa United three points against ten-man Shooting Stars.

Rangers were crowned NPFL Champions on home turf after a 2-0 win over Bendel Insurance. Augustine Kenechukwu and Chidiebere Nwobodo turned on the heat for Fidelis Ilechukwu’s men as they reclaim Champions status for the first time since 2016.

Sporting Lagos claimed a 2-1 win over Enyimba to keep their homes of staying in the NPFL alive. The Lagos tech boys must secure three points against Shooting Stars in their next game to stay in the league.

Remo Stars fell to a 2-1 defeat against Sunshine Stars, with both teams ending the game with ten men.
