NPFL: Flying Enugu Rangers claim eighth league title

Enugu Rangers have claimed their eighth Nigeria Premier Football League title after defeating Bendel Insurance 2-0 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Soccernet.ng reports.

Rangers needed a win to lift their eighth League title heading into their penultimate game of the season against Bendel Insurance at the Cathedral. They were favourites to get the win, and they did just enough to get it.

They started the game well, and they finally got the breakthrough midway into the game, with Agu Kenechukwu finding the net in the 33rd minute.

The Flying Antelopes dominated the fixture, and they eventually got their second of the game through Chidiebere Nwobodo, who scored in the 65th minute to make it 2-0. That was just enough to give Rangers the victory on the day.

The victory takes Rangers to 67 points, five points above second-placed Remo Stars, who are on 62 points with one game to go. That means that Rangers have won the NPFL title with one game to spare.

This will be Rangers’ first league title since 2016 and their eighth NPFL trophy in total. It also guarantees them a place in the CAF Champions League next season.

However, Rangers’ title win is the only major issue that has been sorted. There’s still the battle for continental football between Enyimba, Remo Stars, Shooting Stars, Plateau United, and Lobi Stars.

There is also the relegation fight among Sporting Lagos, Akwa United, Bayelsa United, Kwara United, and Niger Tornadoes. By the final round of games next week, everything will be decided.
