Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi has revealed that he would prefer to play as a creative midfielder if he had the opportunity to adjust his career, Soccernet.ng reports.
Ajayi has enjoyed a decent career so far. He started his football journey with the Charlton Academy, and he has enjoyed a steady rise since then.
The 30-year-old defender has played for clubs like Arsenal, Cardiff City, AFC Wimbledon, Crewe Alexandra, Rotherham, and West Brom, where he has been since 2019.
The Nigeria international has always been a regular for West Brom in defence, but he had admitted that if he could restart his career, he would have loved to play a more creative role- the number 10 position.
“I would like to play as a Number 10, I think that’s everyone’s dream position, playmaker, free role, you have the freedom to express yourself to the maximum,” Ajayi told Elegbete TV.
“I grew up as a striker then worked my way backwards. As a young boy as a striker, then I became number 10, then I became a central midfielder, and now I’m a defender.”
Unfortunately, Ajayi can’t change his position. However, he can change the Super Eagles’ position if he puts in a good shift in defense when they play South Africa in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Saturday.
