Champions League: Nigeria’s fufu man loses out as prolific Real Madrid claim 15th title

Borussia Dortmund were the underdogs going into the tie, and they eventually fell

Nigerian attacker Karim Adeyemi was on the losing end as Borussia Dortmund succumbed to a painful 2-0 defeat against Real Madrid in the final of the UEFA Champions League, Soccernet.ng reports.

Borussia Dortmund locked horns with 14-time Champions League winners Real Madrid at Wembley Stadium. Los Blancos were massive favourites to win the game because of their quality and experience. Nonetheless, Dortmund fancied their chances after ousting PSG in the semis.

Coach Edin Terzic started Nigerian forward Adeyemi on the left side of Borussia Dortmund’s attack as always.

Dortmund started the game well, pushing high up the pitch unexpectedly. Real Madrid found it hard to get spaces in Dortmund’s backline, and Vinicius Junior struggled to create chances as Julian Ryerson did a good job on him.

Adeyemi had a big chance in the 21st minute, when he went one-on-one with Thibaut Courtois in front of goal. However, he fluffed his lines, as he chose to dribble past the Belgian goalkeeper. Eventually, that decision proved to be wrong, as after getting past Courtois, he was forced wide and his shot was blocked by Dani Carvajal.

Seven minutes later, Adeyemi had another opportunity after he was played through on goal. This time, the 22-year-old forced a save from Courtois.

Dortmund dominated the first half and the beginning of the second half, but it fell apart in the 74th minute after Carvajal scored a header to make it 1-0.

Then, in the 83rd minute, Vinicius scored again after capitalizing on a mistake in Borussia Dortmund’s backline. Adeyemi had 72 minutes of action before he was taken off for Marco Reus.

It eventually ended 2-0 at Wembley, with Real Madrid claiming a record-extending 15th title.
