Fulham FC forward Alex Iwobi has revealed the hunger driving their upcoming clash against the Republic of Benin, guided by former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, Soccernet.ng reports.
The German tactician managed the Super Eagles from 2016 to 2021, during which time Alex Iwobi was a key player in his squad.
The former Arsenal player expressed his joy at meeting his former boss ahead of the Super Eagles’ clash against the Republic of Benin.
However, Iwobi declared it would be a fierce battle against his former boss as they prepare to lock horns today at the Felix Houphouet Stadium in Abidjan for matchday four of their 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
“Abidjan, training done, game tomorrow [now today], big, big game. We bumped into Gernot Rohr; nice seeing him and his staff; nice seeing he looks well too. But tomorrow [now today] is war,” he added.
Rohr was dismissed by the then President of the Nigeria Football Federation over indiscipline in his dressing room just before Nigeria’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
For the 70-year-old coach, he will be aiming for a must-win victory against his former side to pay back for his unexpected exit in 2021 and also steer his team’s hope of 2026 World Cup ticket.
