United States U19 coach rejects Nigeria’s “insulting” salary offer to be Finidi George’s assistant – report

United States U19 coach Michael Nsien has turned down an offer from the Nigeria Football Federation to assist newly appointed Super Eagles coach George Finidi following contractual disagreements between the two parties, Soccernet.ng understands.

Nsien, a former Nigeria U23 international, was among the candidates who applied for the Super Eagles coaching position when the NFF searched for Jose Peseiro’s successor.

However, the NFF appointed Finidi for the role, with the former Ajax winger having been Peseiro’s assistant for 20 months.

Interestingly, eleven days after announcing Finidi’s appointment, the federation is yet to constitute his coaching crew.

According to a Punch report, the NFF Nsien extended an offer to Nsien for the assistant coach position.

The football reportedly proposed to pay Nsien on a per-match basis rather than offering him a full contract, which Nsien declined.

While Nsien was willing to partner with Finidi for the Super Eagles, the 43-year-old expected the NFF to offer him a full contract and match or better his current paycheck with the US team. Apparently, the federation was not ready to meet Nsien’s requirements.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the terms, a source close to Nsien described the NFF’s offer as “insulting,” highlighting that Nsien is not in dire need of employment as he still has two years remaining on his current contract with the US team.

With Nigeria preparing to face South Africa and the Benin Republic in crucial World Cup qualifiers next month, the rejection leaves the NFF in a quandary regarding their coaching staff.
