Osimhen’s efforts insufficient as Bologna condemn Napoli to damning defeat

Osimhen won a penalty, but he refused to take it himself

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen won for Napoli, but they failed to capitalize as they fell to a 2-0 defeat against Bologna at the Diego Maradona Stadium, Soccernet.ng reports.

Napoli returned to Serie A action with a fixture against high-flying Bologna at the Diego Maradona Stadium. Recall that the first leg of the fixture at Bologna ended in controversial fashion, with the club’s Tiktok posting a disrespectful video of the Nigerian striker.

However, the issue has since been resolved. And this time, coach Francesco Calzona deployed Osimhen to lead his attack.

Unfortunately for the Partenopeans, they had a poor start to the game, conceding twice in the opening 12 minutes courtesy of goals from Dan Ndoye and Stefan Posch.

However, in the 21st minute, Osimhen gave Napoli a lifeline after he was fouled in the box.

But instead of taking the penalty, he handed it over to Politano. Also recall that in the first leg, Osimhen missed a penalty. That was probably the reason he handed it over to Politano.

Unfortunately, Politano missed the penalty, which could have been the boost Napoli’s needed to start their comeback.

Osimhen was quite silent in the first half and had to wait until the 69th minute before registering a shot on target.

Napoli huffed and puffed, but they could not break Bologna’s backlike. It eventually ended 2-0 for Thiago Motta’s men. With that loss, Napoli’s chances of even qualifying for the Conference League seem bleak, with Fiorentina just behind them by one point but with two outstanding games.
