Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has expressed disappointment over Bayer Leverkusen’s loss to Atalanta in the final of the Europa League, but he does not want to dwell on it, Soccernet.ng reports.
Boniface started from the bench when Bayer Leverkusen took on Atalanta at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Wednesday. However, he was introduced at halftime after Die Werkself fell two goals behind and it was evident that they needed a presence in the final third.
Still, Boniface was helpless, as Atalanta boss Gian Pero Gasperini obviously outsmarted Xabi Alonso leaving Bayer Leverkusen ineffective in the final third.
Ademola Lookman stole the show, scoring a hattrick to seal the 3-0 win for Atalanta and hand them their first European trophy in 60 years.
Aside from losing the Europa League final, Bayer Leverkusen’s loss also ruined their 52-game unbeaten streak- a record-high in Europe.
After the loss, Boniface expressed his disappointment on social media, but he is looking ahead to German Cup final against Kaiserslautern this weekend.
Going into the German Cup final, Bayer Leverkusen are big favourites against second-tier Kaiserslautern. And their Europa League loss would make them even hungrier going into that fixture. Boniface will hope that he can core the goals that will help his team.
