Nigerians abroad: Brighton-linked Otele outstanding; Akpom, Oluwaseyi on target in the Netherlands, USA

Soccernet.ng kept tabs on dozens of matches potentially featuring Nigerian footballers across different leagues worldwide on Sunday, May 5, 2024.

Here are the standout stories:

Belgium

In the Jupiler Pro League, Chidera Ejuke, Alhassan Yusuf, and George Ilenikhena all featured for Antwerp as they stumbled to a 2-1 defeat to Club Brugge, who paraded Raphael Onyedika from start to finish.

The win catapults Brugge to the top of the table, two points above Anderlecht, who managed only a goalless draw with Union Saint-Gilloise.

China

In the Chinese Super League, Viv Solomon Otabor assisted Cangzhou Mighty Lions’ opening goal, but their hosts, Meizhou Hakka, equalised in the second half as the two teams settled for a 1-1 draw.

Egypt

Zamalek’s impressive seven-game unbeaten run in all competitions ended abruptly in Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria as Ibadan-born Abubakar Liadi scored the only goal to power Smouha to a 1-0 Premier League win.

Germany

Victor Boniface scored an 89th-minute penalty to round off the scoring for league champions Bayer Leverkusen in their impressive 5-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Hungary

In the NB II, 19-year-old David Nwachukwu was among the goals for BVSC Zugló as they secured an impressive 2-0 away win at Kozármisleny.

Italy

At the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milano, Samuel Chukwueze assisted Alessandro Florenzi for AC Milan’s first goal in their thrilling 3-3 draw with Genoa.

Netherlands

Chuba Amechi Akpom provided the assist to Ajax’s first goal and scored the second in the club’s 4-1 Eredivisie victory against Volendam.

The Super Eagles hopeful now has 11 goals in 23 league games for Ajax, only six of which were starts.

Romania

Philip Otele produced his most outstanding display of the Championship Round to inspire CFR Cluj to a thrilling 3-2 Liga 1 win over leaders Rapid Bucureşti.

Otele, a transfer target for Brighton, had a hand in all of Cluj’s goals, assisting the first and scoring the other two goals.

Scotland

Leon Balogun and Cyriel Dessers both starred for Rangers FC as they claimed a 4-1 win over Kilmarnock to climb to within three points of league leaders Celtic on the Premiership table.

Sweden

In the Allsvenskan, Ibrahim Buhari assisted one of the goals that propelled Elfsborg to a fine 3 – 1 victory against Malmö at the Borås Arena in Borås.

USA

In the USL Championship, Patrick Nwegbo assisted the first of Birmingham Legion’s goals as they battled from a two-goal deficit to claim a 2-2 draw with FC Tulsa.

Tani Oluwaseyi continued his excellent scoring form, netting for the third consecutive game, as he bagged the winner in Minnesota United’s 2-1 MLS win at Atlanta United.
