Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala has been awarded the best goal of the 2023/24 UEFA Women’s Champions League season, Soccernet.ng reports.
Oshoala scored a stunning bicycle kick during Barcelona’s 5-0 victory over Benfica in their opening group match. This goal helped Barcelona on their way to winning the Champions League for the second year in a row.
At 4-0 up, Oshoala was brought on by coach Jonatan Giráldez and quickly made an impact, scoring Barcelona’s fifth goal. This was her only goal in two appearances in the competition before transferring mid-season to American side Bay FC.
UEFA announced on Monday that Oshoala’s goal was selected as the best from the tournament.
“The top 10 goals of the 2023/24 UEFA Women’s Champions League have been chosen by UEFA’s Technical Observer panel, with Nigerian forward Asisat Oshoala winning the Goal of the Season for her bicycle kick against Benfica,” UEFA stated.
Other top goals included Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmatí’s goal in the quarter-finals against Brann, which took second place, and Lyon’s Delphine Cascarino’s long-range strike against Benfica, which came third.
Oshoala made history with Barcelona by becoming the first African player to win three UEFA Women’s Champions League titles. She received a winner’s medal despite her transfer to Bay FC mid-season.
Oshoala played in two group-stage matches and scored once before moving to the United States.
During her five years at Barcelona, Oshoala won the Champions League three times and the Primera División title four times, amassing 15 titles in total.
A six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year, Oshoala has also played for Liverpool, Arsenal, and China’s Dalian Quanjian.
