Former Super Eagles star Mutiu Adepoju applauds the Oyo State Government and the organizers of the Oyo State Governors Cup, recognizing the tournament as a vital platform for identifying young talents for the country, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Oyo State teenage tournament gears up for its debut on Monday, May 13th, 2024, with meticulous preparations underway to assure fans of an electrifying tournament that fosters budding talents across the state’s secondary schools.
During a press conference held in Lekan Salami Stadium on Friday, the ex-Real Sociedad star, gave kudos to the Oyo State Government for reviving football competition among secondary schools in the state which he was part of while growing in his football career.
According to him, all grassroots sporting events that have gone down the drain should be revived, and proper mechanisms put in place to ensure they keep running smoothly.
“I’m particularly happy about this competition and it’s good that it’s happening here in Oyo State.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve had this type of competition at the secondary school level.
“I took part in competitions like this in my time; this is a good way to detect future stars for proper and adequate guidance,” the Ex Real Madrid player said.
However, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke, the Oyo State Sports Commissioner, also speaking at the presser, expressed considerable optimism regarding the competition, viewing it as a prime opportunity for studentts to exhibit their talents.
“We deeply appreciate the backing of the state government and Peculiar Ultimate Concerns for spearheading this initiative. Their commitment to investing in youth development through sports is truly commendable. We urge other organizations to take a cue from their example and lend their support to innovative projects like this, which have the potential to positively impact our communities.” She said.
The competition will kick off with Local Government Eliminations spanning from May 13th to May 22nd, 2024. Following this, the Zonal Eliminations are scheduled to take place from Tuesday, May 28th, to Friday, May 31st, 2024.
Subsequently, Screening and Accreditation procedures will commence on Wednesday, June 5th, 2024. The State Finals (Quarter Finals) are slated to be held at Ikolaba High School, featuring two matches at the venue on June 5th, 2024. Additionally, Loyola College will host two matches on June 6th, 2024.
The Governor’s Cup Semi-Finals are set to take place at the Lekan Salami Stadium on June 7th, 2024.
