Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has revealed that Rangers players are devastated after missing out on the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish Cup trophies this season, Soccernet.ng reports.
Dessers joined Rangers last summer after a failed stint with Italian club Salernitana. Still, his exploits at Feyenoord, where he was the highest goalscorer in the Europa Conference League ensured that he arrived Glasgow with a big reputation.
Rangers started the season well, but they tailed off before the end of the year. In all, last season, Rangers won 27 of their 38 games in the Scottish Premiership. On the other hand, their close rivals Celtic won 29 of their games, giving them an eight-point gap at the top of the Premiership table.
Also, the Gers lost the Scottish Cup final to Celtic at Hampden Park on Saturday. The only trophy Rangers won was the League Cup, where they beat Aberdeen in the final.
Meanwhile, Dessers, who had a decent debut campaign with 21 goals and five assists in 51 appearances has expressed disappointment with the outcome of the season. He has bought into the rivalry between Rangers and Celtic, and he admits that he and his teammates are hurting from Celtic’s success.
“Everybody is devastated. We were close and we played a good game. It wasn’t an easy game and if you lose it that way in the end then obviously it hurts,” Dessers said per Football Scotland.
“It’s been a heavy season, that’s for sure in all kinds of ways. It’s easy to all go down now in energy and everyone needs to take a rest. But to see them celebrate today and 10 days ago gives me a lot of energy to go again this summer.
It maybe seems weird to say now but I cannot wait for pre-season to start again and to do better than this season. I’m looking forward to that.”
Rangers have not won the Premier League in three seasons, but they will be looking to end that run next season.
