Super Eagles and Rangers centre-forward, Cyriel Dessers, was left distraught after Rangers blew their chances of winning the Scottish League title on Saturday, Soccernet.ng reports
The 29-year-old striker scored his 21st goal of the season in the Old Firm derby, pulling one back for Rangers in their 2-1 loss to Celtic, which in turn put them six points below their rivals with two games left to spare.
After the game, the former Feyenoord man cut a desolate figure at Celtic Park. He was unable to contain his disappointment as he watched another domestic title slip into the hands of their arch-rivals.
“It’s a huge disappointment. It’s what you work for every day. Unfortunately, losing is also part of football. It’s all going to be about the reaction we can show in these next two games and in the Cup Final. I think also next season from the start, but our season’s not ending. We worked so hard this season and in the two cups as well and we get a chance in twelve days to win the Scottish Cup Final. If you take away the pain that we have now, that’s a huge opportunity for Rangers to take a trophy in an amazing fixture,” the Super Eagles striker said in quotes revealed by The Daily Record.
While the defeat was a tough one to swallow, Dessers leaned into some words of advice from an old friend in Manchester United’s Erik Ten Hag.
The pair worked together during their time at Utrecht, and now, the striker revealed that the words of the former Ajax manager have helped soften the blow.
“I had a manager, Erik ten Hag, who always said that when something happens in a football game you either mourn for 24 hours or celebrate for 24 hours and then you have to switch your mind to the next game. I thought a couple of times about these words on Saturday and Sunday, but when you come back into this building you switch the button and you try to forget about it. It’s not easy but I want to switch a button and find the energy and power again to go against Dundee,” the former Feyenoord man said, as per National Scot.
Rangers will vie for another title on May 25th as they face Celtic in the Scottish Cup final, but this time, the Gers will be fired up for revenge.
