Arsenal-owned goalkeeper caught between playing for England or Nigeria

Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has revealed that he is yet to choose whether to represent England or Nigeria on the international stage, Soccernet.ng reports.

Okonkwo enjoyed an impressive season with Wrexham in the League Two last season, helping the club gain promotion to the League One. The 22-year-old shot-stopper registered 14 clean sheets and conceded 30 goals in 36 games.

Following his performances, Okonkwo’s name has been mentioned around the Super Eagles team, especially with the instability in the goalkeeping position. Recall that the 22-year-old has represented the English youth sides because he was born in London to Nigerian parents.

Still, Okonkwo can switch to Nigeria’s Super Eagles because he is yet to play for the English senior team. Nonetheless, the 22-year-old has never voiced his readiness to represent Nigeria on the international stage even though he is miles away from getting a Three Lions call-up, who are spoiled for choice.

But from his statements in a recent interview, Okonkwo is still optimistic about a Three Lions call-up, albeit Nigeria is also an option.

“I need to keep playing and carry on my journey. I’m still really ambitious to play at international level. I can still play for England or Nigeria and I’ve not made a choice yet,” Okonkwo told The Mirror.

For most players who have the option to represent a European country or Nigeria, the Super Eagles is always a second option. Apparently, Okonkwo is hoping that he can get a Three Lions call-up in a few years. But if that doesn’t work out, he would embrace Nigeria.

Okonkwo will leave Arsenal permanently when his contract expires by the end of May. He is expected to join Wrexham.
