Super Eagles coaching job: Is Emmanuel Amuneke the new boss?

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are slated to tackle South Africa and Benin Republic in June for the continuation of their World Cup qualifiers

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is yet to officially name the new Super Eagles coach, leaving the Nigerian football community in suspense as speculation mounts within the media, Soccernet.ng reports.

Despite widespread rumours and reports from various sources, the NFF has remained silent on the matter, triggering anticipation for an official statement.

According to reliable sources, as reported by Tobi Adepoji, the NFF Technical Committee has presented two options to the NFF Executive Committee for consideration.

The first option entails appointing a foreign coach from a shortlist of three candidates, provided the NFF’s financial situation allows for such an investment.

Alternatively, the NFF could opt for an indigenous coach, with notable figures like Finidi George and Emmanuel Amunike being touted as potential candidates for the role.

Recently, some sources revealed that Amuneke will be announced the head coach of the Super Eagles. But the Director of Comms for the NFF, Ademola Olajire has frowned at this via a comment made on Sports World WhatsApp group.

Also, conflicting reports from different sources have added to the uncertainty surrounding the appointment.

While some sources suggest names like Finidi George and Amuneke, others provide different candidates, which further makes the decision-making process complex.

Behind the scenes, there appears to be a political undercurrent influencing the appointment of an indigenous coach. While one candidate, Finidi, seems indifferent about the position, Amuneke is reportedly actively campaigning for the role, utilizing all available resources to secure the position.

The lack of clarity from the NFF has intensify speculation and rumours, with Nigerian football community eagerly awaiting an official announcement.

Many within the football community believe that the NFF must make a statement soon to allow the appointed coach to begin preparations for the Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Financial considerations also play a significant role in the decision-making process, with doubts raised about the NFF’s ability to afford a foreign coach. Given the potential budget constraints, it is widely speculated that the NFF may lean towards appointing an indigenous coach to lead the Super Eagles.

Super Eagles stand-in captain William Ekong has lend his voice to the debate whether a foreign or local coach should head the national team.

Ekong was first capped by Stephen Keshi had he has played under several other local coaches like Augustine Eguavoen and Samson Siasia.

He also worked with foreign coaches like Gernot Rohr and Jose Peseiro.

“The ideal situation is for a Nigerian to lead our team,” he told Eagle7fm

“Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire have done well under their own coaches.

“The coaches already understand the culture and players and can easily relate to the team.

“But you cannot also dismiss a foreign coach.

“My experience with Rohr was very good, also Peseiro.

“It (appointment) should not be based on nationality and identities.

“We should decide on what is best for team because we want to win the AFCON and go farther at the World Cup.”

Good and supportive advice from Ekong. Anything contrary to this advice is going to be excise in futility. If the minister of sport sacrifice his conscience for tribalism that will be horrible for the country at this time. Amunike is very rebellious and tribal bigot.
