Lookman’s Empoli stunner inches him closer to Super Eagles’ top three scorers in Europe

Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman’s stellar performance continued as he scored for Atalanta against Empoli, as reported by Soccernet.ng.

The Bergamo-based club, aiming for a European spot in the 2024-25 season, secured a 2-0 victory at the Gewiss Stadium, enhancing their chances.

The match remained goalless until the 42nd minute when Elia Caprile managed to touch Mario Pasalic’s penalty but could not keep it out, opening the scoring for Gian Gasperini’s side.

In the second half, Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations’ hero hammered a powerful shot into the bottom left corner to double Atalanta’s lead.

With this goal, Lookman has now notched nine goals in 27 appearances for Atalanta this season, bringing him close to Terem Moffi, Victor Boniface, and Victor Osimhen, who currently hold the top three spots.

The Napoli forward leads the chart with 13 goals, followed by Bayer Leverkusen forward, Boniface and Moffi with 11 goals each—making up the goals score in Europe’s top five leagues.

Lookman strike against Empoli puts him within touching distance of the top three, with nine goals to his name after his back-to-back performance for Gian Gasperini’s men.

With seven fixtures remaining in the 2023-24 campaign, Lookman will be eager to add to his goal tally and surpass Osimhen’s leading mark.
