“He is frustrating”- former Rangers reveals part of Cyriel Dessers’ game that needs work

Dessers has 13 goals this season, but he could have scored more

Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson has expressed his frustration at Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers’ because of his profligacy in front of goal, Soccernet.ng reports.

Dessers joined Rangers in a €5 million move from Cremonese after a failed stint in Italy. Although, he did not perform at Cremona, his exploits at Genk and Feyenoord was what encouraged the Gers to secure his services.

However, Dessers’ performances have been topsy-turvy since he joined. The 29-year-old hitman started the season slow, but he eventually picked up the pace and now has 13 goals and three assists in 27 appearances for the Gers.

He has often been accused of missing clear-cut chances at the club, and even with his 13-goal haul, many fans are still unsatisfied. Former Rangers man Ferguson, who made over 100 appearances for the club also shares that though, as he believes that Dessers does not play like a traditional number nine and lacks sharpness in the box.

“He’s (Dessers) frustrating. When you’ve played with some quality strikers you know if they get space in the box it’s one and two-touch finishes. But he always wants to take that third and fourth. He blows a bit hot and cold,” Ferguson said, per The Herald.

“But he’s still got 13 goals in the Premiership. I think the manager has got in his head. If he’s been feeling the pressure he’s not shown it too much and that’s probably down to the manager.

“But I’m still not sure exactly what Dessers is. Is he a target man? Does he run the channels? He’s certainly not an out-and-out finisher. Sometimes he makes runs and you wonder where he’s going. He’s a bit of a mixed bag.

“He looks like somebody who needs to be coached when it should be natural in his game.”

Rangers take on close rivals Celtic on Sunday in a match that could determine the direction of the Premiership title. And despite the complaints about Dessers, he is still the best at Rangers. He would likely lead the line for the Gers, and coach Phillipe Clement would hope that the former Genk man delivers the goods.
