The Super Eagles remain without a substantive coach nearly two months after Jose Peseiro vacated his post.
The Nigeria Football Federation is in a race against time to name a new head coach for the national team with about six weeks left to the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic.
After inviting applications from interested tacticians last month, the NFF had the difficult task of screening more than 60 coaches who applied for the job.
According to reports, the football body has drafted a final shortlist that includes several Nigerian coaches, including Emmanuel Amunike and Michael Nsien, who coaches the USA U20 team.
Three European coaches also reportedly made the final shortlist, and they are Danny Bujis from the Netherlands, Domnece Torrent from Spain, and Toni Conceicao from Portugal.
But who are these coaches, and what are their track records?
Soccernet.ng‘s Imhons Erons took a closer look at the foreign coaches who could end up handling the Super Eagles.
Danny Buijs is the current head coach of Eredivisie club Fortuna Sittard.
At 41, he is the youngest European coach and the most surprising name on the NFF shortlist.
A versatile full-back who also operated as a defensive midfielder during his playing days, Bujis featured for Feyenoord, Groningen, and Sparta Rotterdam, among others in the Netherlands, as well as Scottish side Kilmarnock.
The Dordrecht-born star won the KNVB Cup in 2008 with Feyenoord and the Scottish League Cup with Kilmarnock in 2012.
He ended his career at amateur league side Kozakken Boys, and the club gave him his first chance in coaching in 2016.
He left two years later to take charge of his former club, FC Groningen, where he has enjoyed his longest spell, winning 50 games and losing another 60 in 138 matches.
On the first day in June 2022, Buijs was hired by Belgian club Mechelen, but he was only there for a few months before being dismissed in October.
Fortuna Sittard came to his rescue last summer and appointed him manager ahead of the 2023/24 season.
With four games left to play this term, Fortuna Sittard are 11th on the 18-team Eredivisie table after winning nine and losing 13 of 30 matches.
The club needs only one point to be free from any relegation worries.
Whether the club stays in the Dutch top flight or not, Buijs will jump at the chance to coach three-time African champions Nigeria.
Born in Santa Coloma de Farners, Spain, Domènec Torrent grew up wanting to hit it big in football as a midfielder.
However, after failing to carve a successful playing career, Torrent went into coaching and handled a number of small clubs in the 90s and early 2000s.
His big break eventually arrived in 2005 when he was named the manager of Girona.
Barcelona found alignment in Torrent’s possession-based football philosophy and appointed him as assistant coach of their B team.
When Pep Guardiola was made manager of Barcelona’s first team, he asked Torrent to be his assistant, a request the older man obliged.
After the two enjoyed incredible success at Barca, they moved to Bayern Munich and recorded similar feats.
Guardiola and Torrent went to Manchester City together in 2016.
In 2018, after earning recognition as Guardiola’s longest-serving assistant, Torrent left Manchester City to go and head the coaching team at New York City.
Brazil’s Flamengo, the reigning champions of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, snapped him up in 2020.
He lasted barely three months in charge, though, as his record of 15 wins, five losses, and six draws was not good enough for Flamengo.
After over a year without a club, Torrent became Galatasaray’s manager in January 2022. The 61-year-old was sacked by June after a run of poor results.
António Conceição da Silva Oliveira is a retired full-back who played all his club football in Portugal, wearing the colours of Braga, Vizela, Porto, etc.
He made only one international appearance for Portugal before calling time on his career in 1991.
After quitting playing, Conceição turned to coaching and managing clubs in Portugal, Romania, Cyprus, and Saudi Arabia with varying degrees of success.
Despite spending over 12 years handling clubs in his homeland, Conceição’s best outing in Portugal is leading Trofense and Moreirense to win the second-division title.
However, Conceição’s CV has been boosted by his spell in Romania, where he led CFR Cluj to two league titles and four cup honours.
Conceição landed a job in Africa for the first time in 2019 when Cameroon named him the national team coach following the exit of Clarence Seedorf.
He led the Indomitable Lions to the semifinals of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which Cameroon hosted before his team was stopped by Egypt.
Cameroon won the third-placed match against Burkina Faso to claim the bronze medal. Still, Conceição was sacked after the tournament.
The 62-year-old has been without a job since.

they shortlisted 3 vs 1 .... the next thing is to. know who among the shortlisted get head to carry cup ..
wish one can collect 30000k and stay. in the country.for 3 months. . without going out .
what are they asking for as salaries...and what are their favourite tactical formations and style of play??
they should pls do the needful and appoint Amunike for the job, he interestingly parades better credentials compared to the so call white skin duo, keshi won us the nation cup, I'm very sure Amunike has the capacity to turn our eagles not only a delight to team to watch but also world beaters.. nta should note tje last two nations cup was won by indigenous coaches.. we need Naija mentality all the
All the foreign coaches are green horns like Paseiro, the unknown quantity that used Nigeria to brush his cv.
Make $170 per hour. its very hard to find jobs nowadays. In this situation, you have access to a wealth of resources to help you with your working abilities. Be motivated to promote Thousands of works such as copy paste things through job boards and career websites vs40 on internet
Just Take A Look At This................. laststrategy044.blogspot.com
give the Spaniard the job. he has the best credential to handle the eagles
Give us our own
We were not shown any write-up on Emmanuel Amunake as done for the other foreign coaches. In the absence of that, Emmanuel Amuneke should be given the nod to coach our Super Eagles. He will surely succeed.
No one can like you more yourself, the white dudes are after our money and have nothing to loose if Nigerian fare badly under their watch but for Amunike, he will do everything within his powers to see Nigeria succeeds.
AMUNIKE ALL THE WAY!
I will pick Dominec Torrence He seems to have more trainings and knowledge after working in Barca and with Oga Pep.
It’s like you guys don’t want to qualify for 2026 World Cup. Appointing Amunike is like kissing the WC goodbye. Either the Spaniard or the Portuguese for me. That way, there’ll be no ethnic/tribal biases or federal character, agents won’t be able to influence selections and no over-blown egos. Amunike should handle our U23 team and CHAN Eagles.
we should just ask ourselves two questions..
1) yes we want to go to WC 2026 ...Ans..Torrent
2) no we just want to participate in qualifiers..And... Amuneke
None of those coaches are topnotch coaches. Amunike is way better than all of them. We are too old to use world cup for a gamble. I prefer a well known coach not just people who want to use Nigeria to gain recognition. I see it as an insult to compare those unknown coaches with Amunike who fully knows Naija football too well as an old player and a successful coach.
Amunike
won the u17 world cup with golden eaglet.
where he discovered Victor Osimeh, Chukwueze etc,
He coached Tazania national team and quality them for their first ever African cup of nations..
Tribalism has eaten deep into our system and I can guess thatcs where your opinion is coming from.
At senior level of football what are Amunike's credentials apart from qualifying Tanzania to their first AFCON in 20 years?
His ratio of wins to loses are not encouraging enough.
The era of football where everyone picks he is one of our won has passed.
As we speak today, how many teams are being managed by their own except that the.manager has a better club management output.
How many?
Winning U-17 is not same as coaching a national team full of professionals who have seen it all in terms of coaches and technical input.
The only telling threat in our group is South Africa who has a coach Hugo Bros that has imbued his team with a fearless attacking playing style and had good in game plan which I doubt Amunike ca cope with if faced with such situation.
I have harped on this before, if we want to play possession based football and still qualify for WC 2026 we should appoint the Spaniard Dominic Torrent or , Cencaio the Portuguese because he has the experience of managing an Africa team -Cameroun,but if we want to go for a local coach , I'd prefer Ndubisi Egbo ex FC Tirana of Albania coach than Amunike because he as a better CV in terms of managing top level footballers.
I hold nothing against Amunike, but I am not too convinced of his credentials.
But if NFF decides to hand it to him, then let's hope and pray he does not disappoint us.
Like I said before, I am only speaking based on antecedents, I may be proved wrong if Amunike eventually handles the SE, but caution is the better part of valour.
Nigeria should not be a dumping ground for these jobless foreign coaches and some of their collaborators in the NFF who are only interested in the dollar gains. Appoint Amunike and give him a salary in line with the position. Let the environment be condusive for work. Enough of these colonial mentality. Maybe the NFF should elect the next Nigerian President in 2027. Greedy lot.
