WAFCON: Super Falcons’ dreams of reclaiming African crown to be delayed – report

After winning the competition eleven times, the Nigeria women’s national team is the most successful on the continent

The 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations may not be held this year, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 15th edition of the biennial African women’s football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football is scheduled to be hosted by Morocco.

The Moroccans are billing to host the WAFCON in consecutive editions, having hosted the last editions in 2022.

South Africa defeated hosts Morocco in the final to claim the continental crown for the first time in the country’s history, dethroning Nigeria.

Nigeria were the defending champions at the tournament, but the Super Falcons were dethroned, finishing in fourth place.

However, all hopes of reclaiming their lost crown at WAFCON 2024 may be put on hold as recent reports suggest that the organizers are contemplating delaying the tournament.

According to one-time BBC sports reporter Osasu Obayiuwana, the WAFCON faces the risk of not taking place this year.

Twelve teams have already qualified for the competition, including Morocco, South Africa, Algeria, DR Congo, Botswana, Ghana, Tanzania, Tunisia, Senegal, Zambia, Nigeria, and Mali.

Only three countries have ever won the AFCON, with Nigeria’s Super Eagles ruling the continent a record 11 times. Equatorial Guinea have won the competition twice, while South Africa boast one title.
