Report: Super Eagles dressing room favours Jose Peseiro over local coach

Jose Peseiro led the Super Eagles of Nigeria to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations where they lost to Cote d’Ivoire

Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro reportedly enjoys strong support from the players of the Super Eagles of Nigeria to continue as the head coach of the national team, as per Soccernet.ng.

After the expiration of his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation at the end of February, Peseiro bid farewell to the Super Eagles players on his social media platforms.

However, recent reports from Nigerian media suggest that Augustine Eguavoen, the Technical Director of the NFF, has assumed the role of interim manager for the Nigerian national team.

Despite this, a new report indicates that the players still prefer Peseiro, who guided them to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, and are opposed to the appointment of a local coach.

Following Peseiro’s departure, names like Emmanuel Amuneke, Finidi George, and Samson Sia Sia have been linked to the role, signaling a potential shift towards a local coach by the Nigerian Football Federation.

Nevertheless, it’s understood that Eguavoen’s reported appointment as interim coach and rumours surrounding Amuneke are not confirmed.

Recent sources, including OGN, revealed that the NFF has increased Peseiro’s contract offer from $50,000 to $80,000, but there’s been no response from the former Venezuelan manager.

Currently, there’s no official announcement regarding the appointment of a coach, leaving the Super Eagles team coachless as they prepare for an international friendly against El Salvador.
