Coalition of former Everton, Ajax, Barcelona, Lille stars proposed to coach Nigeria’s Super Eagles

The Super Eagles have the immediate task of qualifying for the 2025 AFCON and the 2026 World Cup

Former General Manager of Bananawa FC, Mr. Harry Yachi, has proposed that Daniel Amokachi, George Finidi, Emmanuel Amunike, and Vincent Enyeama be appointed to coach the Super Eagles.

The position of the head coach of the Nigerian men’s national team became vacant after Jose Peseiro announced his departure on March 1 at the expiration of his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation.

The Portuguese tactician had been in charge for 22 months, guiding the Super Eagles to a runner-up spot at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

Former international and Technical Director of the NFF Augustine Eguavoen has stepped in as the interim boss of the national team.

However, efforts are underway to engage a substantive head coach before the next round of World Cup qualifiers kicks off in June.

Following the unconvincing reign of Peseiro and the perennial financial constraints of the NFF, there is a growing clamour for an indigenous coach to be appointed for the Super Eagles.

Former Ajax winger George Finidi, who presently manages Enyimba International, is one of the names being tipped for the job.

Ex-Everton forward Daniel Amokachi, former Lille goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, and one-time Barcelona winger Emmanuel Amunike are other options available to the NFF.

Emmanuel Amunike

However, former Bananawa boss Yachi has proposed that all four former Super Eagles stars should be engaged, with Amokachi leading the pack.

“Now that Peseiro has left, I am calling on the NFF to give the job to Daniel Amokachi, to be assisted by Emmanuel Amuneke, Finidi George, and Vincent Enyeama,” Yachi told the Daily Trust.

“They should be given five years to rebuild the Super Eagles. Amokachi has what it takes to lead the team. He was there when Nigeria won the AFCON in 2013.

“If these names I have mentioned agree to work together, they will produce a formidable squad that would go on to win laurels for Nigeria.”

The highlights of Amunike’s coaching career include guiding the Golden Eaglets to win the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup and helping Tanzania qualify for the 2019 AFCON.

Amokachi, who has not taken up a coaching role in a few years, served as assistant coach to the late Stephen Keshi when Nigeria won the 2013 AFCON in South Africa.

  • we don't need a whole lot of them , we should engage Amunike to lead the super eagles , he has been tested with the youth team and can replicate his performance with the senior team having some of his boys now playing for the super eagles.

  • Objectively, Amunike should lead the park while either Amokachi or Finidi assist with Enyeama handling the goalkeeping department. Let him rebuild the entire team with more focus on creative midfield positions

  • Amunike is preferred choice since he has worked with those boys in the team and won trophy in the past

    • All of them cannot work together because of ego, someone has to take responsibility. In view of this I prefer Amunike as head coach, Eyeama as keepers coach with Finidi assisting Amunike.

    • finally we are supporting our people. one thing we have more than physical prowess is brain. Our coaches can bring us sucess. its always embarrassing to see European coaches on our touchline. I pray they make the right call.

  • there should be continuity finidi would have it and choose his assistant let us learn from cotdovuire let's allow finidi to continue and choose his assistant

  • Let them go for a Dutch coach with attacking style of play. That’s suits our mentality.
The clamour for indigenous coaches is self defeating and pandering to sentiments.

  • With the current situation of our country, we can’t afford foreign coach without having financial problems and the best way forward is to hire Amunike, Finidi & VINCENT ENYEAMA for Nwabali with two new and reliable keepers but for God sake, can we have a referee if not referees in AFCON too? We are only debating on our internal issues but the major needs as a Giant of Africa has never been addressed.

  • Pedro 'Bubista' Brito could be a better option if NFF and Nigerians insisting in getting a foreign coach for the eagles though we have to persuade him out of his current contract but tactically way forward to fix our Midfield, counter attacking and needed Long passing we lacked since 1994.

  • I think the nff should appoint amokachi as head ,Emmanuel amunike should be he is assistance n the enyeama the goalie trainer this guys we make a formidable team

  • Coalition of former players as coaches for Super Eagles? It's a RECIPE FOR DISASTER, it will mark the end of Nigeria senior male football
