African Games: Ghana 2-1 Nigeria: Late comeback condemns Super Falconets to silver

Nigeria’s under-20 team female, the Super Falconets, fell to an extra-time 2-1 loss to Ghana in the final of the 2023 African  Games, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Falconets have been impressive at the African Games. They started on a good note, defeating Morocco in their first game. Then, in their second game against Senegal, they claimed a 2-0 win. That victory sealed a place for them in the semi-final of the competition, where they beat Uganda 2-0.

Christopher Danjuma’s girls then got a date with hosts Ghana in the final of the competition on March 22. It was expected to be a tough encounter, and the game met expectations. The fixture took place at the 15000-capacity Cape Coast Stadium, and the stadium was filled with Ghanaian fans.

Despite playing away from home, the Super Falconets got the lead in the 23rd minute through Edeh Njideka, who capitalized on a goalkeeper error to score the first for Nigeria. Ghana pressed hard for an equalizer, but the Super Falconets held on till halftime.

In the second half, Ghana were slightly the better side, as they pushed hard for the equalizer. They eventually got it in the 78th minute through Tracy Twum. That goal pushed the game into extra time.

Then, in the 99th minute, Mukarama Abdullai scored the clincher for Ghana. The Super Falconets pushed hard for the equalizer and push the game to penalties, but Ghana held out to win it and emerge as champions.

What us your take on the Super Falconets’ performance?
