Victor Osimhen scored just one goal at the AFCON 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast as Nigeria picked up the silver medal as the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara.
Former Arsenal and Barcelona forward, Theirry Henry has challenged Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen to prove himself outside of the Italian Serie A, Soccernet.ng reports.
Osimhen, 25, won the Capocannoniere award last season, after scoring 26 goals in the league to help Napoli secure their first Scudetto title in over three decades.
His stellar performances also saw him rank 8th in the Ballon d’Or positions, and cart away the CAF Player of the Year award.
This season, the story has not been the same. Following the dismissal of two managers in Naples, coupled with his injury problems, the former Lille man has managed nine goals and three assists in all club competitions this term.
The 25-year-old scored the equalizer for his team against Barcelona at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on his first game since he returned from the AFCON tournament, and French legend, Henry, praised him.
“I think he needed the goal today. At the AFCON, we saw him, he can lead the line, run into the channels, and has excellent hold-up play. How good can he be? He showed last year what he could do and won the African Player of the Year along the way, winning the Scudetto with Napoli and getting to the final with Nigeria,” the French U-21 coach said on the UEFA Champions League show with CBS Sports Golazo.
Henry, a Champions League winner with Barcelona in 2009, challenged the Nigerian striker to do much more and prove himself elsewhere after he was linked with moves to Chelsea and PSG.
“I’d like to see him now, what he can do in the Premier League or wherever he’s gonna go or Paris Saint-Germain. Not Arsenal, I won’t go there. I want to see him take the next step and be more consistent with his output, but to be able to win the title with Napoli the way he did will stay in history forever, so all the best to him in his career,” the 46-year old added.
Napoli will face Barcelona at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium on the 12th of March as they look to cause an uproar to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
N.B: We’d like to know your thoughts on this decision. Do you think Victor Osimhen should leave Napoli? Which club should he move to?
