“The favorite does not always win” – South Africa boss Hugo Broos talks tough ahead of AFCON semi-final clash with Nigeria

The Super Eagles are slight favourites to get the win against South Africa, but Broos is confident that they can cause an upset

South Africa coach Hugo Broos has stated his iterated his belief that his team can defeat Nigeria in the semi-final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday, Soccernet.ng reports.

Nigeria take on the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the semi-final of the AFCON on Wednesday.

Nigeria are slight favourite because of their quality on paper, but with the shocking results that the AFCON has produced, Jose Peseiro’s lads could be humbled if they do not play well. Moreover, they will be facing a South African side that is full of belief after ousting 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco in the round of 16 and stealing a draw against Tunisia in the group stage.

Ahead of the fixture, Bafana Bafana boss Hugo Broos believes that his team can rise above expectations and claim the win against Nigeria.

“It’s a little bit the same situation with Morocco, a very good team with players in Europe with big teams, so you can compare it,” Hugo Broos said per Kickoff.

“I think for many people, Nigeria will be favourites to win that game, but as you know, in football, it’s not always the favorite that wins.

We are confident and motivated to make sure that doesn’t happen and that South Africa, after more than 20 years, is in the final.

The game between Nigeria and South Africa will take place at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake.
