Super Eagles: Jose Peseiro set to decide future ‘soon’ amid links to manage Zamalek and Algeria national team

Jose Peseiro’s contract with the Nigeria Football Federation ended following the conclusion of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament

Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro is reportedly contemplating his future as head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria following the conclusion of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, Soccernet.ng reports.

Peseiro’s contract stipulates that he must guide the Nigerian national team to at least the semi-finals of the 34th edition of the Nations Cup to be considered for a contract renewal.

Under his guidance, 2013 AFCON champions finished as runners-up in the competition, ranking third-best in Africa and 28th globally, per FIFA.

Despite his successful campaign with Nigeria, Peseiro has attracted interest from Egyptian club Zamalek SC and the Algerian national team.

However, reports suggest that the 63-year-old gaffer is seeking some rest—following the AFCON tournament—before making any decisions about his future.

“I just arrived in my homeland, Portugal, to have a rest. I received an offer from Alfaf, and my agent will handle the matter. I received many offers that I must first rest after the African Cup finals. I will decide my future soon,” stated Peseiro, as quoted by El Hayat TV.

Diego Andrei, Peseiro’s manager, confirmed that there has been no response regarding the offer from the Algerian Football Federation. He emphasized that Peseiro needed time to recuperate after the African Cup finals before deciding on his next move.

“Currently, I have no response regarding the Algerian Football Federation’s offer. Coach Jose Peseiro was very tired after the African Cup finals and needed to rest. Peseiro will rest for a few days, and then we will decide his future destination. We will study the Algerian Federation’s offer carefully, like the other offers we have received,” Andrei said.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are scheduled to resume their 2026 World Cup qualifiers campaign in June, facing South Africa at home and Benin Republic away.

If Peseiro and the Nigeria Football Federation come to an agreement, he is expected to lead the team in these crucial matches.
