The three-time continental champions failed to add a fourth title to their haul after losing to Cote d’Ivoire in the final
Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will host the Super Eagles at the State House in Abuja after the team’s adventure at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite several off-field issues, including financial constraints and injuries to key players, the Super Eagles exceeded expectations to reach the final of the AFCON.
To get to the final, Nigeria avoided defeats in six games, beating Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Cameroon, Angola, and South Africa after earning a 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea.
The Eagles, however, failed to soar in the final, falling to a 2-1 defeat to host Cote d’Ivoire.
Encomiums have been pouring in for the team following their exploits at the 34th edition of the continental championships.
To celebrate the Eagles, the presidency has announced that President Tinubu will host the national team players and officials today, Tuesday, February 13, 2024, once their arrival from Abidjan is confirmed.
The Super Eagles players are expected to depart Abuja for their various bases in Europe and South Africa after the meeting with the president.
Nigeria have won more silver medals at the more than any other team on the continent, with the one claimed on Sunday the fifth in the nation’s history.
The Super Eagles are also three-time winners of the competition, securing glory on home soil in 1980, in Tunisia in 1994, and in South Africa in 2013.
